However, if you’re not familiar with Firefly, I suggest you get up to speed before you plunge into this series. The story is set up nicely, and I had no problem following the plot. This first issue of Serenity was a satisfying read, and it certainly has the feel of the Firefly verse. By the way, Jayne’s living with his mom and yes, he’s wearing the hat. How are they going to get Jayne to cooperate? What else? Money. She’s taken up Hoban’s mantle, and she’ll never be him, but she’ll do her best by Zoe and Serenity.Īnd how are the rebels going to track down Mal? Through Jayne of course. Watch me soar.”, and somehow it feels right. River, who’s piloting, just has to say “I’m a leaf on the wind. There’s more in store for Zoe and it involves a rush to a medical facility. Of course this happens because it wasn’t bad enough seeing it the first time. She asks him to stay and he says, “I’m a leaf on the wind”, and right after he says it Zoe sees him getting killed again. Zoe is very pregnant, and to really tug at your heart strings, she has a vision of Hoban. ![]() River’s had eight months of normal and Mal doesn’t want to rock that boat. Inara wants Mal to take a job because they need the money (when don’t they?). But don’t worry, they still have time for arguing with each other. This issue doesn’t leave much to the reader’s imagination as to how they redirect their energy. She’s no longer a companion, and she and Mal have finally woken up to their feelings and stopped constantly insulting each other. Inara is on board, but things have changed there as well. While Simon, River, Kaylee and Zoe are still part of the crew, Jayne is gone. The true state of things with the crew of Serenity has changed a bit since we last saw them in the movie. Where they’re at has no name and since, as Mal says, they’ve recently dealt the alliance a pretty big blow so some place no one ever thought to name is as good a place as any for them now. As for Serenity and her crew, they aren’t anywhere. So is the Alliance, and they’ve enlisted a bounty hunter to help find Serenity, and if you’ve watched Firefly, you’ll recognize him - although there’s some mystery around this fellow. The leader they want is Mal, and they’re looking for him. For the most part the rebels are young and they want a leader. One side of the true state of things is the existence of bona fide rebels. The third official isn’t talking the party line and is much more objective (and correct) about the true state of things. Two of the officials are in full-on denial mode and styling protesters as terrorists. This issue sets things up with several panels of three Alliance officials discussing the events of the movie, specifically the Miranda recording about the origins of the Reavers that Mal was able to broadcast (in the movie). Serenity, the comic, opens up a few months after the events of the movie, and if the title of this arc isn’t enough to warn you that there’s going to be some blurry vision going on while you read this issue, then you probably haven’t see Serenity, the movie. As the outlaw crew try to cope with the loss of two of their own, the Alliance and the rebels both ask. In a bloody last stand, Mal broadcast thisrevelation to the ’verse, proving it to the operative sent to kill River. In their fight to elude the Alliance, Mal Reynolds and his crew revealed that the Reavers, an interstellar breed of cannibal pirates, were the result of another Alliance experiment. River, prized and feared by the Alliance for her psychic abilities, was pursued relentlessly across the ’verse. Simon Tam, who rescued his genius sister River from Alliance experiments and found refuge on Serenity. ![]() ![]() The captain of the ship, Malcolm Reynolds, and first mate Zoe Washburne remain Browncoats at heart, dodging bounty hunters and making friends and enemies throughout the ’verse. Deep in the blackness of space, a Firefly-class vessel named Serenity shuttles between planets, taking odd jobs, legal and otherwise. THE GALAXY STILL REELS FROM THE UNIFICATION War, in which the Alliance cemented their dominance, crushing the Browncoat resistance. Comic Review: Serenity #1, Leaves on the Wind
